Empowering children to become leaders and changemakers is one of the most effective ways to secure a sustainable future. When young people are given the tools, encouragement to take action and given opportunities to lead, they become powerful advocates to inspire others and pave the way for generations of leaders to come.
A vision came to life last September 18, 2025, when the “Basura sa Bahura: Cleanup, Conservation, and Creative Learning” was held at Ilig-iligan Beach, Yapak, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan. The initiative inspired students from Manoc-manoc Elementary School and Balabag Elementary School to become active stewards of Boracay’s coastal and marine ecosystems, fostering a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation and their role in protecting the island’s natural beauty.
The activity was made possible through the continued partnership of LifeBank Foundation, LifeBank – A Rural Bank, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) Boracay, Haribon Foundation, and Water.org. A total of 57 participants took part in the environmental learning experience, including 23 learners and teachers from Manoc-manoc Elementary School and 24 learners and teachers from Balabag Elementary School, alongside partner representatives and volunteers.
More than a beach cleanup, the event became an immersive learning experience. Guided by Mr. Ramil Marin, Boracay personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR – CENRO), students discovered how trash reached the shore, learned to identify and classify different types of waste, and explored the importance of protecting coastal and marine ecosystems. These hands-on activities transformed environmental concepts into meaningful lessons, nurturing not only awareness but also a lasting sense of responsibility for their island home.
As the activity came to a close, participants left behind a cleaner shoreline and carried home something even more valuable, a renewed commitment to protecting Boracay’s natural treasures. Through their reflections, students expressed a greater appreciation for the environment and a stronger resolve to practice responsible waste management and encourage others to do the same. Teachers, facilitators, and volunteers left with the conviction that nurturing environmental consciousness in youth is essential for a resilient, sustainable future.
The success of “Basura sa Bahura” is a reminder that environmental stewardship begins with education and collective action. By empowering young minds today, we are cultivating a generation of informed, compassionate, and committed environmental champions who will continue to protect and preserve our natural resources for years to come.
