A 23-year-old young leader, John Michael Laniog, is making a remarkable impact in his community through dedicated and inspiring leadership. As Secretary General of Iriga Youth for Responsive and Green Advocacies (YRAGA) Youth Organization and SK Chairperson of San Isidro, Iriga City, he has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and community development.
Leading by example, John empowers his peers and advocates for positive change, showing how dedication and passion for good governance can inspire hope and action among the youth. Through his commitment to service, he continues to be a motivating force for progress in his community.
YRAGA was founded and born out of a simple yet urgent mission: to mobilize and empower young people. “Nangyari to dahil alam naming na kailangan magkaroon ng boses ang mga kabataan lalo na sa mga henerasyong ito,” John explains. Recognizing the need for a strong, unified youth voice, YRAGA quickly established itself through impactful activities such as feeding programs, clean-up drives, and various community initiatives. These efforts have provided safe spaces where young people can discover their strengths, foster a sense of purpose, and contribute meaningfully to society.
A pivotal moment for YRAGA emerged through strategic partnerships. Through the support and collaboration of LifeBank Foundation and Partnership for Transparency Foundation Asia (PTFA), youth gained valuable training in project proposal writing, budget planning, and the principles of good local governance. These opportunities equipped passionate volunteers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become capable leaders, enabling them to create meaningful and lasting impact in their communities.
“Nung time na po yun, masyado po akong na-inspired lalo na mag-advocate po sa good local governance kasi yun po ay napapanahon at kailangan ng mga kabataan na malaman,” John recalls. This inspiration fueled his resolve to transparency, accountability, and effective governance for the benefit of his community. By sharing his experiences, John hopes to encourage more youth to take an active role in promoting good governance and making a positive difference in local leadership.
YRAGA’s commitment and impact have not gone unnoticed. The organization is now accredited by both the National Youth Commission (NYC) and the Local Youth Development Council of Iriga City, a recognition of its credibility and tangible contributions.
